Minority Floor Leader Atty. Laisa Masuhud Alamia joins a panel of women changemakers and movers for gender equality in Justice for Women and Girls: Galvanizing Action for an Equal Future, an event organized by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), UN Women, the World Bank and the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies.
More than 5 billion people have unmet justice needs globally, many of whom cannot obtain justice for everyday concerns, are excluded from opportunities provided by law, and live in extreme conditions of injustice.
Women and girls’ access to justice, however, is much more limited due to discrimination and gender inequality. The COVID–19 pandemic has worsened the state of gender justice, as we confront a rise in gender-based violence, prevalence of discriminatory laws, limited digital spaces, and discrimination against women workers, among others.
MP Alamia joins the call for “accelerated, ambitious commitment, action, and investment on justice for women and girls” as she takes part in tackling the unacceptable levels of exclusion from justice and bridging the justice gap through the said event. Joining her in the panel are Executive Director Hadeel Abdel Aziz of the Justice Center for Legal Aid (JCLA) in Jordan, Senior Vice President Enid Muthoni of the Center for Reproductive Rights’ Global Legal Program, and Dr. Omaira Bolaños, Director of the Latin America and Gender Justice Programs under Rights and Resources International.
The event is mounted as part of a global effort to address the gender justice gap and in support of the Generation Equality Forum that will be held in Paris, France on June 29, 8:00 P.M. (Philippine Time).
